Human Saliva and Sputum Samples
Saliva and sputum samples are becoming an alternative to blood samples for genomic profiling in biomedical research. Additionally, saliva has emerged as a promising biospecimen for biomarker identification and validation studies.
Sample Collection and Storage
Saliva and/or sputum specimens are collected in clinic or prior to surgery, unless requested otherwise. Specimens are collected after an oral rinse with warm water and never within 30 minutes of the patient eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum. Five minutes after the oral rinse, saliva is collected once a minute for up to 10 minutes. Specimens are aliquoted to 1mL, unless requested otherwise.
Saliva specimens are frozen within 1 hour of collection and stored at -20°C or -80°C.
